Smile Stop Dentures & Implants on From Fit to Function: The Partial Denture Process

Are you missing a few teeth and thinking about getting partial dentures? You are not alone. Many people use partial dentures to bring back their smiles and make eating easier. At Smile Stop Dentures & Implants, we know that getting new teeth can feel like a big step. You might wonder what will happen during your visits. You might ask how long it will take or if it will hurt. We are here to help you understand every part of the process.

This guide will walk you through the partial denture process from start to finish. We want you to feel ready and calm. By knowing what to expect, you can look forward to your new smile. Let us look at each step, from your first meeting with us to the day you take your new teeth home.

Step 1: Your First Visit and Checkup

The journey to your new smile starts with a simple chat. We call this your first visit or consultation. When you come to Smile Stop Dentures & Implants, our main goal is to listen to you. We want to know what you need and how we can help.

During this visit, our dentist will look inside your mouth. We will check your gums and the teeth you still have. It is very important that your remaining teeth are strong. They will help hold your new partial dentures in place. We will also take some X-rays. X-rays are like special pictures that show us the bones under your gums. They help us make sure your mouth is healthy enough for dentures.

If we find any problems, like a cavity or sore gums, we will fix them first. Your mouth needs to be a healthy home for your new teeth. Once we know your mouth is ready, we will talk about your choices. There are different types of partial dentures. Some have metal parts, and some are made of flexible plastic. We will help you pick the best one for your mouth and your budget.

Step 2: Making the Perfect Mold

Once your mouth is healthy and you have chosen your dentures, it is time for the next step. We need to make a copy of your mouth. This copy helps us build partial dentures that fit you perfectly. We do this by taking impressions, which are also called molds.

To make a mold, we use a soft putty. We place this putty in a tray and ask you to bite down on it for a few minutes. It might feel a little funny, but it does not hurt. The putty hardens and makes an exact shape of your teeth and gums.

We also need to see how your top and bottom teeth come together when you close your mouth. This is called your bite. We will measure your bite carefully. This step makes sure your new teeth will let you chew your food easily. We will also help you pick the right color and shape for your new teeth. We want them to look just like your natural teeth.

Step 3: Getting Your Teeth Ready

Sometimes, your natural teeth need a little help before they can hold partial dentures. This is the third step in the process. Partial dentures often use small clips or clasps to stay in place. These clips hold onto your real teeth.

To make sure the clips fit well, the dentist might need to make tiny changes to a few of your teeth. This might sound scary, but it is usually very simple. The dentist might smooth a small spot on a tooth so the clip can grab it better. This helps your dentures stay secure when you talk and eat. You do not want your teeth slipping while you are having dinner with friends!

If you need a tooth pulled before getting your dentures, we will do that now. If you do have a tooth pulled, your gums will need time to heal. We might give you a temporary denture to wear while you wait. A temporary denture is a stand-in tooth that keeps your smile looking good while your gums get better.

Step 4: The Trial Run

After we take your molds and get your teeth ready, a special lab makes your partial dentures. But before they finish the final set, we do a trial run. This is called a wax try-in.

The lab sends us a wax model of your new teeth. It looks like your real dentures, but the base is made of wax instead of hard plastic or metal. You will come to the office and try this wax model in your mouth.

This is a very exciting step! You get to see what your new smile will look like. We will check to see how the teeth fit together when you bite. We will also ask you how they feel. Do they look right? Are they the right color? If anything needs to be changed, we can fix it easily because the base is just wax. We want everything to be perfect before the lab makes the final set.

Step 5: The Final Fitting

Once the wax model is perfect, the lab makes your real partial dentures. Now it is time for the final fitting! This is the day you get to take your new smile home.

When you come in, we will place the new partial dentures in your mouth. We will check the fit very carefully. The dentures should feel snug but not painful. We will look at how the clips hold onto your natural teeth. We will also check your bite one more time to make sure your top and bottom teeth meet correctly.

It is normal for the dentures to feel a little tight or strange at first. Your mouth is not used to having them there. The dentist will make small adjustments to make them feel better. They might smooth out a spot that rubs against your gums. We will not let you leave until you feel comfortable and know how to put your dentures in and take them out.

Step 6: Learning to Live with Your New Teeth

Getting your partial dentures is just the beginning. Now you have to learn how to live with them. The first few weeks are an adjustment period. Your mouth needs time to get used to the new teeth.

Eating with Partial Dentures

Eating might feel tricky at first. We suggest starting with soft foods. Things like yogurt, mashed potatoes, and scrambled eggs are great choices. Cut your food into small pieces and chew slowly. Try to chew on both sides of your mouth at the same time. This helps keep the dentures balanced and stops them from tipping.

As you get more comfortable, you can start eating harder foods. But you should still be careful with very sticky or hard things, like caramel or hard candy. They can pull on your dentures or break them.

Speaking with Partial Dentures

You might also notice that you sound a little different when you talk. Your tongue has to learn how to move around the new teeth. You might lisp or have trouble saying certain words. Do not worry; this is completely normal.

The best way to fix this is to practice. Read a book out loud or sing along to your favorite songs. The more you talk, the faster your tongue will figure out what to do. Soon, you will be speaking clearly again.

Dealing with Sore Spots

It is common to get a few sore spots on your gums during the first few weeks. Your gums are getting used to the pressure of the dentures. If you feel a sore spot, call Smile Stop Dentures & Implants. We can make a quick adjustment to your dentures to fix the problem. Do not try to fix the dentures yourself, as you might break them.

You might also notice that your mouth makes more saliva (spit) than usual. This happens because your brain thinks the dentures are food! This will stop after a few days as your mouth gets used to the dentures.

Step 7: Regular Checkups

Even after you are used to your partial dentures, you still need to visit Smile Stop Dentures & Implants. Your mouth changes as you get older. Your gums and the bone under them can shrink. This can make your dentures feel loose.

If your dentures start to slip or feel uncomfortable, come see us. We can adjust them or add new material to the base to make them fit snugly again. You should also come in for regular checkups so we can clean your natural teeth and make sure your mouth is healthy.

Why Choose Partial Dentures?

You might be wondering if partial dentures are the right choice for you. They offer many great benefits. First, they help you chew your food better, which is good for your stomach and your overall health. Second, they help you speak clearly.

Partial dentures also protect the teeth you still have. When you lose a tooth, the teeth next to the empty space can start to shift or lean. A partial denture fills the gap and keeps your real teeth in the right place. Finally, partial dentures give you back your smile. They help you feel confident when you talk, laugh, and take pictures with your family.

The Different Types of Partial Dentures

During your first visit, we will talk about the different types of partial dentures. It is helpful to know a little bit about them before you come in.

Cast Metal Partial Dentures: These are the most common type. They have a strong metal frame that holds the artificial teeth and gums. They use metal clips to grab onto your real teeth. They are very strong and last a long time.

Flexible Partial Dentures: These do not have a metal frame. They are made of a special plastic that bends a little bit. They use clear or pink clips that blend in with your mouth. Many people like them because they look very natural and feel comfortable.

Acrylic Partial Dentures: These are usually used as a temporary fix. They are made of hard plastic and are thicker than the other types. We often use these while you are waiting for your gums to heal after a tooth is pulled.
